You try not to need Healing Word, but it is the most effective way to stop someone from dying. Shield of faith and Bless are fantastic, especially at low levels, but they lack the "wow" factor of Magic Missile, so I usually only used them for boss fights. For life clerics, you can dump Dex and take Str instead.įor levels 2 through 4, I basically use them as jacks-of-all-trades: primarily off-tanks with a dagger, but with sacred flame and guiding bolt for ranged targets, and of course support as needed. I tend to run them with 14 Dex and max Wis, with Con as the next highest ability score. In particular, the fact that only the life cleric fets heavy armor in Solasta is unfortunate. I find them to be a little underwhelming until level 5. Law's disadvantage on enemy saving throws is kinda bad early game, but once you get your 3rd level spell slots and Lightning Bolt you can basically deal 30ish damage to 3+ targets per spell slot.Īlso meme cleric builds are hella funny, I played 4 clerics once and chaining Guiding Bolt can really screw up boss encounters. Oblivion's mass poisoning can be clutch, but it is highly situational. Life is pretty nice because you can use its Channel Divinity to essentially bring back all your downed teammates.

Getting them back every short rest can be utilized very effectively. I guess the only real problem is that it can miss, which is why I always try to initiate ambushes with my cleric to get advantage.įor the specific subclasses, what really matters is the Channel Divinity effects. Guiding bolt is also pretty strong and the advantage it gives is really nice. Inflict wounds in particular is extremely powerful, and can take out most low level enemies in a single hit. TBH clerics are best when you run them on the offensive. That's not to say that you need a Cleric on high difficulties (you don't really need any specific class), but having a class that can dedicate its resources to support (as opposed to for example a Paladin who needs to choose to dedicate their spell slots to support through spells or to DPS through Smite) while also having decent defensive and offensive options (possibly more than decent, depending on domain) is quite useful. On higher difficulties you're going to have more trouble killing enemies quickly and also take more damage, so having strong support options becomes much more valuable. So for a Cleric to shine, there needs to be a more constant use for its abilities. For example Daylight is a great Cleric spell in multiple situations, but a Paladin of Tirmar gets it as well in addition to being a better tank and having better melee DPS. The use of a Cleric in this situation is made even more questionable by the fact that many specific uses of a Cleric can be filled by other (sub)classes that do better damage. On low difficulties support and healing are less relevant and you're better off taking a class with more raw damage output. Meanwhile other domains like Battle get some good offensive spells and support options which naturally leads to a more offensive role as well, almost becoming a blaster Wizard in addition to the things it already does naturally.Īlso, Clerics become more valuable at higher difficulties. Obviously, something like a Life Cleric gets better armor and more/better defensive support options (like healing), so they're better in a more defensive role, being more like a support tank.

You're pretty much always going to have a good support unit with a Cleric, but the way you support your team can change and the value of support itself can change as well. I feel the exact role of a Cleric depends in part on the domain you pick (or the other way around, the domain you pick should fit the role you want them to play), as well as the difficulty you're playing on. Clerics are a strong and versatile class, but they're not nearly as dominant here as they were in many older games (as well as the tabletop game).
